Getting your braces off is the conclusion of a long process. It’s incredibly exciting to reach the conclusion of your orthodontic treatment. When you do get your braces off, this is what you can expect the process to look like.

Get Your Teeth Cleaned

One of the first things you’ll go through after getting your brackets removed is a thorough cleaning. Brackets are known for attracting plaque, and it’s likely that you’ll need to get your teeth cleaned to avoid having white spots where your brackets used to be. Your orthodontist will also need to remove the dental glue from your teeth.

Usually, your orthodontist will use a small grinding tool to gently shave away this glue and plaque until your teeth are cleaned and ready to go. Dealing with this step can be difficult because you’re so close to having your new smile. However, this final step with your orthodontist will ensure that your smile is clean and stunning afterward.

Preventing Future Issues

Once your braces are off, and you’re ready to show off your new smile, you may be ready for your orthodontic journey to end. However, moving on without doing anything to maintain your smile will make your smile go back to the way it was before. Your orthodontist will create a retainer that you can wear while you sleep to keep your teeth as straight as they were the moment you got your braces off.

Wearing your retainer consistently after braces helps ensure your teeth stay straight. This means that you can keep your smile for the rest of your life, without ever having to worry about getting further orthodontic care.

Check Your Wisdom Teeth

One thing that your orthodontist will occasionally do, especially if you’re getting your braces off as a teenager or young adult, is check out your wisdom teeth. Your wisdom teeth are excess molars that your mouth usually doesn’t have room for. These teeth can cause crowding and cause your teeth to become crooked and overcrowded once again.

This crowding can also cause other dental issues including infection. Your orthodontist may take a look at your other teeth to check if your wisdom teeth are coming in. If they see signs of your wisdom teeth, they’ll be able to help you schedule a removal. This ensures that your teeth stay straight and that you avoid further issues.

Congratulations! You’re at the end of your braces treatment. At this point, you’ve likely had your braces on for quite a while, and you’re ready to get them removed and enjoy your new smile. When you’re getting close to getting your braces off, this is what you can expect.
