The dentist isn’t really at the top of anyone’s list of places to visit. While you should be going at least once a year, some things may require an extra visit to see your dentist. Just like with any other health problem, your body will give you signs that you need to pay attention to.

Gum Bleeding

When you brush your teeth vigorously, you may be a little concerned if your gums are bleeding after. While a little bit of blood isn’t a big deal, if your gums are regularly bleeding, it may be a sign that you need to get it looked at. Gum bleeding can be a sign of a buildup of plaque or more serious concerns like gingivitis or periodontitis. 

You may also want to check with your doctor to see if any medications you are taking could cause your gums to be more tender. If your gums are inflamed or tender to the touch, it may be time to make an appointment to see your dentist.

Severe Tooth Pain

Your teeth are a tiny part of your body, but when they hurt, they can take over everything. Severe tooth pain often radiates to other parts of your body and can even cause issues with your hearing or your sight. You can try to take some painkillers and sleep it off, but if there are other symptoms, don’t ignore those. 

Tooth pain accompanied by a fever is often a sign of infection. Getting food stuck in your teeth is a common reason for tooth pain which can be solved by flossing or brushing your teeth, but more serious issues like a cracked tooth, infection, injuries, or wisdom teeth erupting are all things that you should see a dentist for. 

Sore Jaw Muscles

If you haven’t been participating in amateur boxing and your jaw is sore, it is a pretty good sign that you need to work on relaxing those muscles. But if the soreness continues, it could also point to other problems. Teeth grinding and clenching are commonly associated with sore jaw muscles, and both grinding and clenching will cause your teeth to wear down quickly. This often happens during the night when you are sleeping, which means you may not even know you are grinding or clenching. Your dentist can make sure that it isn’t because of misaligned teeth or another issue, and they can help you get a dental-grade mouth guard to protect your teeth from further damage.

Don’t avoid the dentist just because you think you have good oral hygiene or that you can deal with any issues on your own. Your teeth play a vital role in your overall health. You need to care for them the same as you do the rest of your body.
