Signs That You May Drink Too Much Coffee

START SLIDESHOW >>

Many people begin their day with a cup of coffee. You might even indulge in a few more cups throughout the day. However, there is such a thing as too much coffee, and it’s important to be aware of the three most telling signs.

Sleep Issues

Coffee is typically consumed to help you wake up or stay alert. So, it makes sense that too much coffee can affect your sleep. Caffeine is quickly absorbed into the body and acts fast, but doesn’t leave the body as quickly. Caffeine typically has a half-life of about 4-6 hours. This means that roughly six hours after you’ve had it, your body has only processed half the caffeine. If you drink too much coffee or drink it late in the day, the effects of the caffeine can still be influencing you when you try to sleep. Coffee can impact your ability to fall asleep, the quality of your sleep, and the duration. Often, you could wake up and not even feel fully rested. If you experience issues with sleep, then it may be time to cut back on the coffee.

Stained Teeth

Coffee is highly pigmented and it can leave your teeth stained. Tannins in coffee will stick to your teeth which will leave them looking yellowed. If you consistently consume coffee, then you can continually stain your teeth. If that’s the case for you, then you might be drinking too much. But if your teeth have been stained, don’t worry. There are methods to whiten your teeth again. Dental whitening treatments can reverse the damage to your teeth from coffee. On your own, you can use whitening toothpaste or even brush your teeth with baking soda to restore your teeth’s bright white color.

Withdrawal Symptoms

Caffeine stimulates your nervous system in order to help you stay alert. However, consistent consumption of caffeine can lead you to become dependent on it. If you are dependent on coffee, then you will experience symptoms of withdrawal when you break your routine. These symptoms include headache, irritability, inability to focus, fatigue, and more. If you experience these symptoms when you don’t have coffee, then you probably are drinking too much and it’s time to cut back.

Coffee is a widely consumed beverage. However, it is something that should be consumed responsibly. Too much coffee can cause many problems for you. Be aware of the signs that you drink too much coffee so you can avoid these issues.
