Remodeling Delays and How to Overcome Them

START SLIDESHOW >>

Unexpected delays can turn an exciting home remodel project into a nightmare. As a homeowner, however, you have more control than you think at preventing delays in the remodel process. Check out the following common delays and ways you can overcome them!

Errors

An error or mistake during remodeling can be costly financially and cause long-term delays. Errors during remodeling are difficult to fix, requiring a lot of time and money to do so. Lack of communication with your workers, a contractor, or changing your mind increases the probability of errors. Make sure you have a clear idea of what you want done and communicate it effectively. You should also choose your contracting team carefully, verify their credentials and sign a contract to encourage the work to be done correctly and on time. If time is of the essence to you, let them know from the start.

Costs

There are always unexpected costs that come up during a home renovation project. Whether the condition of the home is worse than originally anticipated, or supplies and crews cost more than expected, it is important to budget your remodel higher than you expect it to take. Set aside money for the most expensive parts of your project, and make compromises on the smaller things if necessary. For instance, appliances can be the most expensive part of a bathroom remodel, but they’re also most important. Stick to your budget to avoid going into debt or stalling the remodeling process.

Permits and Inspections

With the exception of small remodeling projects, projects will require permits from the city. It is also likely that you will need to get several permits. The permit process helps make sure that homes meet the safety standards of your state, and equipment or construction crews are fully approved. Future buyers need proof of permits and inspections before purchasing. Failing to acquire the proper permits or pass the proper inspections will delay your remodeling projects. Choose an experienced contractor who can fast-track your plans and build according to code!

There are some home remodel projects you may choose to do yourself, but do not underestimate the time and effort it will take to fully complete. You also need to recognize when a project is out of your depth, and it would be safer for everyone if you hired an expert. Depending on your remodel style you can work with a contractor and involve them as much as you’d like. But avoid unnecessary delays like unexpected errors, additional costs, and failing to obtain permits or inspections on your home remodel!
