How to Help the World Break Free From Fossil Fuels

START SLIDESHOW >>

With climate change at the forefront of global discussions, many people are looking for ways they can make a difference. Fossil fuels are one of the major contributors to climate change. If you want to reduce your individual carbon footprint, there are lifestyle changes you can make to reduce your dependency on fossil fuels.

Change Your Driving Habits

One way to reduce your fossil fuel use is to change your driving habits. You can do this by finding ways to use alternate means of transportation, especially for short trips. If you have the option, try and take public transportation. Begin by taking public transportation for short trips to places that are a few miles away. If you have a bicycle, try biking to work. Many cities now offer micro-mobility options, like shared electric scooters or bikes, which is a great way to make short trips, or to bridge the gap between a transit stop and your front door.

Make Your Home Sustainable

There are changes in your home that can help make it more sustainable. One easy switch you can make is installing LED bulbs which use significantly less power than traditional incandescent bulbs. Another way to improve energy usage in your home is to install solar panels on your home. Solar removes nearly 10,000 pounds of CO2 from the air every year. Another way to save energy is to turn off televisions, computers, and other electronics when you are not actively using them.

Buy Local

Another great way to reduce fossil fuel usage is to shop local. Shopping locally includes patronizing small businesses in your communities and farmers markets. These types of places often source their products from your community or state, meaning these goods do not have to travel as far to get to you as products in larger stores or online. A benefit of shopping at the farmer’s market is that the produce you purchase there will be fresher than the food you find at the grocery store. Shopping at local businesses like coffee shops, bookstores, and boutiques helps support the economy of your city or town.

There are several ways to reduce your individual dependency on fossil fuels. Changing your driving and shopping habits and looking for ways to reduce energy use in your home are a few good things you can start with. Encourage your friends and family to make similar changes to help make a bigger impact.
