How to Avoid Embarrassing Situations on a First Date

First dates can be so much fun, but for many people, they end up being at least a little bit embarrassing. However, this doesn’t have to be the case. If you play it right, your first dates can be a great time for everyone involved.

Listen and Ask Questions

First dates are about getting to know one another, and that means taking the time to ask questions and really listen to your date. If you know you are prone to zoning out, try to find techniques to stay invested in the conversation. It helps to ask questions that are compelling and fun, and to really listen to what the other person has to say. Be sure to ask follow-up questions if you are interested in something or your date seems particularly passionate. This will help you to find more ways to connect and have fun with the first date experience.

Avoid Certain Foods

There is nothing worse than having your first date progress well, then having everything get messed up by bad breath or a stained shirt. There are some foods that, no matter how delicious, just aren’t quite right for your first date experience. Garlic and onions are one of the most common culprits of bad breath. If you can avoid the smelliest foods, then you can keep your breath smelling fresh so you are prepared for whatever may happen. Going out for mint chip ice cream can also get your breath into good territory, if you need an emergency plan.

Give Yourself Room to Relax

For some people, going on a first date can be a stressful experience, but there are a few things you can do to relax a little and have more fun. Try starting out before the date begins by choosing an outfit you feel good in. Then take a little time to meditate and breathe so you feel calm and prepared before your date. Finally, try to plan a date that you can have fun with and make it a point to have fun with the person you are getting to know. If you can relieve your stress, you will have a much better time and be less likely to have an embarrassing experience.

Dates should be fun, so don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Instead, simply try to have a good time while getting to know a new person. If you can stay calm and interested, it will do great things for the success of your date and maybe even the beginning of a new relationship.
